Hand in Hand Connects to Israel Museum On Friday April 7th the Hand in Hand "family" gathered at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
The children of the three Hand in Hand schools together with their parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, teachers and principals were at the Museum for a big Hand in Hand get together. The families, coming by bus and private cars from the Galilee, Wadi Ara & Jerusalem arrived at the museum at 11am, and were welcomed by David Ibgui, Chief Curator of the Youth Wing of the Israel Museum.
For the different activities, the nearly 600 participants were divided into small groups. Each group was led by two guides, one speaking Hebrew and one Arabic. The first stop was a lecture and slide show color in art, culture and history. The children were mesmerized and it was difficult to stop them commenting and asking questions. Next was a tour of one of the many fascinating galleries of the museum. For many of the participants this was their first visit to the Israel museum, and they just wanted to see more and more.
The final activity was in the Museum's famous sculpture garden. Around sculptures of Henry Moore, Auguste Rodin and other artists the groups created their own sculptures. Using colored string the groups slowly enveloped the sculptures in a string web.
Besides having great fun it was a meaningful, inspiring and connecting experience. The museum staff was so excited by the creations that they decided to leave them in place for a few days.
A light lunch was served and the families heard greetings from Josie Mendelson, co-director of Hand in Hand, and Ala Chativ, co-principal of the Jerusalem school. To end this incredible day the eight grade class of the Jerusalem school performed a song and dance, prepared and choreographed by the children themselves, it was definitely the highlight of the day!
David Ibgui when asked to comment on the day said a happening of art, culture, families, Jews, Arabs, children, adults and good weather! What could be better?
A mother from Wadi Ara summed it up in four words THE DAY WAS PERFECT!
